    Romero at Atletico Madrid until 2031

    Spanish club Atletico Madrid has signed Argentine defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur on a long-term contract. The 28-year-old center-back has signed a deal with his new club until June 2031.

    According to reports, Atletico has acquired Romero for a transfer fee of approximately 40 million Euros. After completing his medical examination at Madrid’s Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre, he officially signed the contract at the club’s Riyadh Air Metropolitan office.

    Romero initially joined Tottenham on loan in the 2021-22 season. He subsequently became a key permanent member of the London club. In five seasons with Tottenham, the Argentine made 156 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 7 assists.

    Romero’s most significant achievement in his career with Tottenham came in the 2024-25 season. Under his leadership, the English club won the Europa League title. This marked Tottenham’s first European trophy in 31 years. Romero was also named the tournament’s best player in that campaign.

    Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Romero began his professional football journey with Club Atlético Belgrano in 2016. He then played for Genoa and Juventus in Italy. His time at Atalanta was also successful, where he was named the Serie A Best Defender after his outstanding performance in the 2020-21 season.

    Romero’s list of achievements with the Argentina national team is also quite extensive. The defender, who has played 59 international matches to date, has won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles, and the Finalissima.
