At least 27 people have been killed in a head-on collision between a passenger minibus and a truck in Zimbabwe. All the deceased were Christians who were on their way to attend a church conference.
The accident occurred last Friday (August 28) night near Chivhu town, about 140 kilometers south of the capital, Harare.
According to an NDTV report, citing the country’s police, a truck collided head-on with an oncoming minibus while attempting to overtake another vehicle. Following the collision, the minibus caught fire and was completely gutted. Twenty-three people died at the scene.
Later, the death toll rose to 27 as four more people succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital. At least seven others were also injured.
Zimbabwean police stated that fatal road accidents are common in the country due to reckless driving, poor road infrastructure, and overloading of vehicles. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
